Stories about SAAB 2.019

From the begining, I was in some way linked to aeronautics. My father worked since the 1930s in an airline and instilled in me the passion for airplanes. In one way or another, SAABs were always close to this environment.

Before I turned 40 and entered the 21st century, I was able to realize a longing that I ever had: Buy a new SAAB 9-3, in this case TiD (MY01) to use it as a company car. Despite the first mechanical setbacks, mainly due to the deficient maintenance of a service that was not up to the mark, I finally had the good fortune to meet Talleres SAAB Sport Granada (Spain) where I found the professionalism and good treatment that until today they continue to give SAABs and above all to their loyal customers. Bravo for the committed specialists!

Despite the fact that the employment situation changed, I still keep this 9-3 today for large journeys by motorway mainly through the Iberian Peninsula. It is rough, noisy, spends little, but has the personality, character, touch and good finish of a whole SAAB. With good maintenance I managed to keep it as if it had just left the factory only a few months ago.

Between 2,004 and 2,006 I was able to enjoy a rare 900i 5-door (MY91). Although I took care of it and enjoyed everything I could, a breakdown of suspension, steering and damping was impossible to resolve and ended unfortunately in the scrapping. It was my short passage through the SAABs prior to the entry into SAAB of the GM automobile giant.

To compensate for this loss I was lucky enough to find in 2006 an interesting 900 2.0T SE 5-door “Imola Red” (MY96) with which I have enjoyed and continue to enjoy long journeys on all kinds of roads. An exceptional SAAB engine with a technology that has not been obsolete after more than 20 years.

And finally, in 2009 I got the 9-3 that I always wanted: Aero Cabrio (MY02). Little can I add to what is already known about the benefits of this unique car. Just highlight the pleasure of driving it on great trips through Europe enjoying landscapes and monuments in the open. Another engine with features and exceptional performance.

The years go by. Many friends are getting rid of their wonderful SAABs like these that I keep and with whom I share my love thanks to regional and national Clubs. A constant is to hear the “laments” having stopped having them. The SAABs leave a great memory to all who have truly enjoyed it.

SAAB is a brand very little known by for everybody but what is widespread is the admiration they provoke: “These cars are good, right?”

The official dealers are disappearing although there is still some other committed to customers and their SAABs. There are also independent workshops and professional mechanics who feel curiosity and admiration for the brand. They are acquiring knowledge to serve clients like us so that we can keep them and enjoy them every day.

I have managed to have in my house a large garage in which I keep my three machines as well as a good number of parts, rims, and service spare parts… I am ready to enjoy SAABs for many years.

The new generations maintain a certain distance with the world of the automobile. It is logical because the economic situation and environmental awareness makes new priorities arise among which is not the enjoyment of driving a car. However, I believe that a conservationist and non-destructive movement of quality technology has a great future, as SAABs are still a good example. They are still very valid cars to be used, especially in large journeys through our extensive road networks. I hope that over the years this love continues, between young and old, for things well done; as always has been a good SAAB car.

Maybe this deep-rooted feeling makes us increasingly less SAAB fans but much more committed and convinced.

We will continue to see many years on the roads.

  • Thanks for the great Story, very interessting to read About Saab from the southern part of Europe.

  • Hola Marco.

Great to know I’m not alone in Spain….. Driving myself a 900 II convertible in this amazing rubi-red. And a 900 I Coupé. After a long odyssey with many bad experiences I also found a garage with formal Saab
workers. Great knowledge. Big passion for Saab. Every problem has been solved so far……Every time I’m using one of them it’s impossible to take this strange smile of my face. Which by the way can be seen almost inside every Saab driving by……

  • Of course, Herman.

I will go next august to IntSaab Weerselo (NL). See you!!

  • P.S.
900 II and 9-3 I have been underrated by many for a very long time. The right choice of colors and wheels, your story plus your pictures let them really shine, Mr. Fernandez …

I have read a second time through your story and enjoyed your photographs once more and I just fell in love with your 9-3 coupe on her 3-spokes. She is a plain beauty and nothing less …

  • Marco, muchas gracias por tus palabras. Me ha gustado mucho y tenemos la misma pasión. Yo también tengo dos 900 II y un 9-3 para todos los días. Si algún día vengo a España te visitaré.

  • I appreciate your words of encouragement and recognition, Ebasli. I hope we can meet with our SAABs and continue talking about this great passion that unites us.

  • Thank you very much for sharing Tom. It is a great pride for me to write again on SAAB Blog. Long live all of us who enjoy SAABs for many years.

  • Many thanks to you, Marco Fernandez. You made my (sun-) day ! ! !

And I 2nd everything that has already been said. Great pictures, good story, beautiful cars and country …

  • What a wonderful story and excepional beautiful pictures, making me feel deeply impressed and touched! Thank you so much for these fantastic Spanish impressions and for keeping three great and beautiful SAABs on the road! What a beautifel and seldom red colour by the way.

I agree a 100 percent with all your wise statements and conclusions regarding sustainabilty etc. I am also so happy to manage to buy within the last year two SAABs, an in- and outside beauty, a Griffin convertible MY 2012, and just recently her nice blue sister, a SportCombi MY 2011 – and to organize two garage places for them right here in the centre of a million city. I enter the garage every day with a smile on my face and I am enyjoying every journey with these somewhat members of the family 🙂

Wishing the same to you for further many many years and uncountable pleasant journeys in beautiful spain! All of the very best from Hamburg to Spain!

  • Very nice story – thanks for sharing!
